Huawei recently applied to the U.S. federal trade commission (FTC) for a hearing in the fall on whether or not it wants to compete in the U.S. telecom market.
"In recent months, some us government agencies have targeted huawei with a series of market interventions under the pretext of vague and unfounded security concerns." Huawei officials told China business news on August 30 that they have now asked the FTC to work with its government counterparts to ensure that the impact of these interventions will be fully understood and explained.
In the competition in the U.S. telecom market, the FTC hearings are an effective way to address any legislative and administrative actions with negative consequences. As the world's largest single country telecom market, the size of the us telecom market cannot be ignored. At present, huawei and zte's overseas market revenue has accounted for a considerable proportion of the company's total revenue, especially for huawei. After gaining a foothold in Europe, the United States has become the last market that huawei has not entered in the global map. On the eve of 5G, the importance of this market becomes more and more obvious.
The move comes after the us federal communications commission sought to ban huawei from selling its equipment to us telecoms operators funded by the government. Xu zhijun, huawei's chairman, even told us media that "us lawmakers' criticism of huawei is ignorance of science".
Xu also noted that federal funding for university research projects has been declining over the past decade, and now accounts for less than 50 percent of total university funding. Much of the rest comes from corporate sponsors such as huawei.
